Abstract

Medial Afterlives of H.P. Lovecraft brings together essays on the theory and practice of adapting H.P. Lovecraft's fiction and the Lovecraftian. It draws on recent adaptation theory as well as broader discourses around media affordances to give an overview over the presence of Lovecraft in contemporary media as well as the importance of contemporary media in shaping what we take Lovecraft's legacy to be. Discussing a wide array of medial forms, from film and TV to comics, podcasts, and video and board games, and bringing together an international group of scholars, the volume analyzes individual instances of adaptation as well as the larger concern of what it is possible to learn about adaptation from the example of H.P. Lovecraft, and how we construct Lovecraft and the Lovecraftian today in adaptation. Medial Afterlives of H.P. Lovecraft is focused on an academic audience, but it will nonetheless hold interest for all readers interested in Lovecraft today. Abstract

"Being familiar with the vast majority of the other collections already in print, I can safely say that this collection will become the leading one on its subject. It works both as a Kubrick collection and as a wider study of Kubrick, Burgess, and the film project that shares their names, A Clockwork Orange. The attention to the Kubrick and the Burgess archives in the majority of essays helps the editors compile a truly original and fresh contribution." --Graham Allen, University College Cork, Ireland This book brings together a diverse range of contemporary scholarship around both Anthony Burgess's novel (1962) and Stanley Kubrick's film, A Clockwork Orange (US 1971; UK 1972). This is the first book to deal with both together offering a range of groundbreaking perspectives that draw on the most up to date, contemporary archival and critical research carried out at both the Stanley Kubrick Archive, held at University of the Arts London, and the archive of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. This landmark book marks both the 50th anniversary of Kubrick's film and the 60th anniversary of Burgess's novel by considering the historical, textual and philosophical connections between the two. The chapters are written by a diverse range of contributors covering such subjects as the Burgess/Kubrick relationship; Burgess's recently discovered 'sequel' The Clockwork Condition; the cold war context of both texts; the history of the script; the politics of authorship; and the legacy of both-including their influence on the songwriting and personas of David Bowie! Matthew Melia is a senior lecturer in film, media and English literature at Kingston University, UK. He is co-editor of The Jaws Book: New Perspectives on the Classic Summer Blockbuster (2020) and a special edition of Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television: '50 Years of A Clockwork Orange' (2022). Georgina Orgill is the Stanley Kubrick Archivist at University of the Arts London, UK, where she is responsible for managing the Stanley Kubrick Archive. She is a qualified archivist with an MA in Archives and Records Management.

Abstract

This volume is the third volume in Palgrave Macmillan's new Iris Murdoch Today scholarly series. Iris Murdoch and the Literary Imagination is the first major collection of literary essays since her centenary in 2019. It brings together leading Murdoch scholars from across the world who expand the boundaries of recent criticism offering work not only on the novels, but on her unpublished poetry and archival materials. This collection discusses her interest in, and use of, Japanese literature; her relationship with, and reader-response to her, in Australia; Murdoch in the post #metoo era; her lifelong interest in the supernatural, same-sex relationships and friendships; as well as the use and abuse of biographical material. The collection widens the field of Murdoch studies and marks a new waypoint in the development of her critical reception. Miles Leeson is the Director of the Iris Murdoch Research Centre at the University of Chichester and Visiting Research Fellow at Kingston University. He is the lead editor of the Iris Murdoch Review and published Iris Murdoch: Philosophical Novelist in 2010, Incest and Contemporary Literature (2018) and the festschrift Iris Murdoch: A Centenary Celebration (2019). Abstract

The 17 contributions in this volume pursue a positioning of the philologies, which - based on the 'Volksgeist' (popular spirit) of the 19th century and the cultural studies of the 20th century - must reposition themselves in the 21st century. The contributions address questions such as: What changes are occurring with increasing globalization? Are national literatures increasingly being absorbed into the so-called "world literature"? The authors come from the fields of Romance studies, German studies and English studies. They deal with topics of literary historiography, canonization, comparative literature, and also questions of the future. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract

Over o.a. J.M.

Abstract

Although every area of life is permeated by digital processes, the majority of Germans seem to resist digital alternatives when it comes to the activity of reading. The printed book continues to enjoy much greater popularity than the eBook. This seems surprising, since the entire communication behavior has moved to digital devices. So what lies behind this? Why are there still printed books in digital times? Previous studies of the printed book have focused primarily on its media future, as this seemed threatened by digitization. In this work, Janina Krieger instead examines the past from three perspectives in order to gain insights into the present. While other studies always chose one method, which mostly belonged to the quantitative approach, here three subjects are identified, which are examined with different methods and in their combination can provide an answer to the research question: the consumers of literature (the readers), literature itself (the selected genre is the novel), and the media theories of the 20th century, which have already dealt with media change. The author Janina Krieger holds a PhD in German Literature and Media Studies from the University of Mannheim. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract

The volume presents Handke's works from Hornissen (1966) to Das zweite Schwert (2020) in individual analyses and at the same time opens up overarching orientations of Handke's writing. The autoreflexive traces that characterise the author's experimental early work are perpetuated in a middle phase by a return to traditional forms of epic narrative and literary models that is philosophically influenced. In the late work, these approaches give rise to a comprehensive poetology of narrative that links all the texts together. In the process, previously developed motifs are condensed into overarching thematic complexes. Alongside the reality of war, the relationship between image and writing, text and film, social and media developments of modernity come to the fore. The reference of Handke's texts to images of the painterly tradition and visual strategies of his writing are given special weight. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Peter Handke by Rolf G. Renner, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The author has subsequently revised the text further in an endeavour to refine the work stylistically. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.
